pastel on black paper

close up of pastel marks

This painting reminds me of my Dad, in a typical code of dress for a farmer at work, with stick in hand, pondering the state of the livestock over the wall.

'Almost monochrome' - monochrome 'of one colour' usually shades of Grey, this one has some blue added to indicate the 'boiler suit' colour of the trousers.
The background colour of the paper has been integrated into the painting throughout, using positive pastel stroke which have then been blended in places. The wall is only 'indicated' giving the figure command of the picture.

This was a sketch as opposed to a finished piece of work. We get so use to working black on white it makes a change to try drawing light on dark and often inspires the mind.
